Do You Own A Construction Business Or Does It Own You?
Recently A Contractor With - Severe financial, personal and health issues contacted me recently in need of someone to talk too who understood the construction industry and could offer some sage advice.
His Story Moved Me - And that is not an easy task. However in this case I understood and could relate to most of what he talked about having experienced similar events in my life as a contractor before selling my last construction business and devoting my full attention to construction bookkeeping and accounting.
Owning A Construction Business - Without a Strategic Business Plan Is like riding a Roller Coaster. For the most part you are not in control, you go real fast, sometimes you get financially upside and hope that in the end you will survive it all and have a retirement income.
There but for the Grace of God Go I - This man's story was one of the toughest I had ever heard and having been involved in the construction industry for well over thirty years I have seen a lot, experienced a lot and done a lot. I have been rich and I have been poor and I like rich is better.
He Was Not Looking - For sympathy, money or handouts. He just wanted someone to listen and understand that even though he had been down in the deepest depths of misfortune he did what it took to pull himself up and out of it. It was apparent his Faith had a lot to do with it.
He Wanted To Know - What my thoughts are on the current economy and is it still possible for someone with no credit, limited cash and a whole lot of grit to succeed.
Absolutely Yes! - The best-selling book of all time, Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth is chock full of historical accounts of people who have experienced good times, bad times, tough times and easy living times. In fact near the beginning is an interesting phrase "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."
I Congratulated Him - On having the grit and determination to pick himself up and go again!
Every Successful Contractor - Has experienced at least one major setback and a few of them have endured several. The key is to keep getting up and going again. Those are the contractors we hear about, not the ones who quit early.
I Shared Some Insights - With him and I will share them with you as well.
-
In school you learn a lesson and take a test; as a contractor you take a test and learn a lesson
-
The difference is that as a contractor you will repeat the test until you learn the lesson.
-
As a contractor you will have many lessons to learn and the quicker you learn them the happier your clients, employees and suppliers will be, the more money you will earn, and less pain you will experience.
-
Two ways to learn the contracting business; Do-It-Yourself or get a mentor, easy way or hard way, the choice is yours
