Some Contractors Bookkeeping Service Firms, Freelance Bookkeers And C.P.A firms are pushing one and two year bookkeeping service contracts on their clients. If this is happening to you contact Sharie at 206-361-3950 or email her sharie@FastEasyAccounting.com right away! You will be glad you did! We offer Flat Rate Pricing - NO Surpirses!
The most common reason I hear is that is the only way to “Lock-In” a customer or client. When I ask why they feel the need to “Lock-Somebody-In” the most common response along the line of “that way we can assign them to our least expensive employee since we bill by the hour we make a lot of money. When the business owner doesn’t get the bookkeeping services they expect….Oh Well…we got’em hooked for a year or two and by then we will find another company to replace them”
When I ask do they have any contractors in their client list most of the time they do a major eye roll, snicker and say something to the effect “Yeah and they are the best because they are too dumb to question anything and if they do we make it seem like everything is their fault”
To say that makes my blood boil would be an understatement. Truth is I’ve needed to excuse myself and go away to keep from doing anything I would regret later. Am I a bit sensitive on the subject of contractor’s needs?
Yes, that would be a fair statement since I was raised in a construction family, majored in accounting at Central Washington University, owned and operated several construction companies, most of my friends are construction contractors and since our entire accounting practice is focused on serving contractors bookkeeping service’s needs.
Some people have suggested rather strongly that I am very passionate about helping contractors achieve their definition of success through our Contractors M.A.P. program which stands for Marketing first, Accounting second and Production third.
What C.P.A.'s Do And What Construction Accountants Do
I will start by quoting a short sentence found in the all-time best seller “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth” That is an acronym; take the first letter of each word and put it together to form a different word. “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other..” there is more to that and the point is that concept applies to accounting.
C.P.A.’s are like I.R.S. agents in that they owe their primary allegiance to the tax collecting agencies and that is O.K. because the government needs our tax dollars to operate.
Construction accountants owe their primary allegiance to the contractor and our role is to help the contractor optimize their construction company so that it will generate the most cash flow and profit over the long term.
We do not offer long term contracts even though contractors have asked for them. The reason they ask for them is to protect themselves against price hikes and unpleasant hourly billing surprises. When they understand we offer a fixed flat rate pricing and the agreement is month-to- month they love it.
Flat Rate Billing and month-to-month agreement means the burden is on us to perform at a high level, constantly innovate, modernize and improve our services because every bookkeeper, accountant and support staff member’s livelihood and future paychecks depend on being re-hired every month by our contractor clients
